The term set-top box will become something of a misnomer in the near future, as most displays will become too thin to allow a box to placed on top of them. As the price of plasma & LCD displays has plummeted and their image quality has improved, they are popping up in homes everywhere.

Although they are the darlings of the media and the generic for flat panel display in the minds of many, plasmas are about to be in a serious fight with other technologies for the flat panel crown.

LCD displays, seen on the desktop for years as computer monitors, and commonplace in smaller flat panel TVs, are finally increasing in size to the point they are becoming a rival to plasmas in the 42″ – 50″ size range. Picture quality is similar to plasmas; however LCDs are immune to the burn-in that can affect plasma displays. This burn-in occurs when plasma units are used to display static images such as video game screens and stock or sports tickers.

Plasmas generally have an edge in the ability to produce deeper blacks and more saturated colors than LCDs. Plasmas are also better at producing full motion video than LCDs because of the response time of the LCD panels, although this difference is disappearing.

LCD TVs are a bit more expensive than plasmas at 42″ and larger sizes, but they should last a while longer. Plasma displays should last 20,000 – 25,000 hours and LCDs should give 30,000+ hours of useful life. However, the latest generation of plasma displays from NEC, LG & others is claimed to have a 60,000 hour life. If that is an industry trend, the traditional lifespan advantage held by LCDs may soon disappear. This comes at a time when Sony and other major consumer electronics manufacturers are either abandoning plasma or reducing their plasma offerings. Others, such as Panasonic, Fujitsu and Pioneer are firmly commited to Plasma technology.

Currently Sony has a 42″, NEC a 40″, Sharp a 45″, and Samsung a 40″ LCD TV or display. Samsung also has the big one, a 46″ that started shipping in early September of 2004. The Samsung 46″ was the first consumer LCD video display to have a 1080 line native resolution. This allows it to display 1080p native when that format arrives for HDTV. The Samsung has been joined by Sony, Toshiba and others, to endow the mid 40″ size category with some pretty solid LCD offerings. The largest consumer LCD TVs or monitors are the Sharp 65″ and Sony showed a prototype 82″ LCD from their Bravia line at the 2006 CES in Las Vegas.

Other technologies are on the horizon as well. One that has shown great promise is OLED, for Organic Light Emitting Diode. Developed by Kodak and Pioneer, this technology has been used for a few years in car stereo and cell phone displays. It’s just about ready for prime time. Philips has shown a 13″ unit, Samsung a 17″, and Seiko-Epson has shown a 40″ prototype.

OLED’s advantages are many. It actually emits it’s own light, so it requires no backlight and has better contrast than a traditional LCD. OLED displays have a wide viewing angle like a plasma display. Power usage is very low, less than 1/2 that of a traditional LCD display. At around 2mm deep, OLEDs are much thinner than either a plasma or LCD.

They have a refresh rate about 1,000 times faster than a traditional LCD, so they will be far superior for video applications. They have fewer parts than LCD or plasma and can be manufactured using a novel ink jet printing process. This promises to keep prices low as the technology is implemented. It is expected to see sub 20″ displays in stores by 2006 with larger units following one to two years later.

Other promising display technologies on the horizon include SED (Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display) and carbon Nanotube. SED was developed by Canon, who began research into the technology in 1986. SED is basically the same principle as CRT, however there are important differences. The most important from a consumer standpoint is thickness. An SED display is only an inch or two thick, depending upon screen size.

The basic construction is two glass plates separated by a vacuum. One of the plates is coated with phosphors the other is mounted with electron emitters. Electrons are ejected when a voltage of about 16 to 18 V is applied to the emitters. These electrons are then accelerated by a higher voltage into a beam similar to that in a CRT display.

The visual advantages of SEDs are as for CRT displays, great color, deep black levels and quick motion response. These advantages, combined with the slim form factor, low cost and small power requirement should make for a real winner.

A unit shown by Toshiba at a Japanese trade show in April of 2005 even had it’s contrast ratio up to an incredible 100,000 to 1 by significantly reducing black luminance. Even if the specs were a bit inflated this would still amount to a fantastic contrast ratio, on the order of 5 times that of a traditional CRT. At one time, Toshiba indicated they would move to this technology for all displays over 40″ by 2006. However, after a spectacular demo at 2006 CES by where they indicated a late 2006 debut, both Canon and Toshiba, Toshiba resheduled their release date for SED until mid 2007, ostensibly to allow them to produce lower cost SEDs.

There is another fly in the SED ointment too. On April 21st, 2005 US firm Nano-Proprietary has filed a suit against Canon in the U.S. District Court of the Western District of Texas, alleging that the surface (SED) televisions that Canon plans to release violates a licensing agreement signed 5 years ago between the Japanese giant and Nano-Proprietary.

The pace of change in the home theater and entertainment display market has just kept accelerating. There are some promising technologies around the corner that will allow, as usual, higher performance, lower cost and more compact form factors. As prices for advanced technologies plunge and technology improves, it will make it even easier for the average person to have a fantastic media system almost anywhere in their home.

A Panasonic vacuum cleaner can be the best friend of someone who wants to keep the carpeting in their home or office in top condition. Panasonic makes several different vacuum cleaners including upright vacuum cleaners and canister vacuum cleaners. In addition, Panasonic makes hand-held vacuum cleaners for quick pick ups.

Panasonic canister vacuum cleaners come both with bags and without. Bag less vacuum cleaners are becoming more popular as they do no require you to purchase or change bags to collect dirt and dust. For this reason, many people prefer bag less vacuum cleaners, sometimes called “turbo” vacuum cleaners. Canister vacuum cleaners have a large canister on wheels that can be transferred easily from room to room while you are vacuuming the carpeting.

One thing that many people like about Panasonic canister vacuum cleaners is that they are very powerful. Panasonic makes some of the top rated vacuum cleaners, both canister and upright, in the industry today. The bag less canister vacuum cleaner, although large, is easy to use. The canister has a unit attached to a hose that is connected to the canister. Canister vacuum cleaners generally offer more power for those who want deep cleaning when vacuuming carpeting. The bag less canister vacuum cleaner by Panasonic is a pleasure to use and works very quickly. I found that my Panasonic vacuum cleaner even picks up cat hair, which is very difficult to remove.

In addition to making many different excellent canister vacuum cleaners, Panasonic also makes several, high quality upright vacuum cleaners. Upright vacuum cleaners are easy to use as well as store. Panasonic upright vacuum cleaners will get your carpet cleaned in record time. These vacuum cleaners are available with bags and as a “turbo” system. They come with different attachments that make it easy to vacuum staircases and in different nooks and crannies.

Although it is not recommended that you use regular vacuum cleaner on wood floors as the bristles can scratch wood surfaces, Panasonic has several attachments available for their canister and upright vacuum cleaners that make wood floor cleaning a breeze. There is absolutely no need to have to sweep your bare floors. Using the floor attachments found on Panasonic vacuum cleaners can make eliminate the need for a broom. I never use a broom; I don’t even have one in the house. I find that using a vacuum cleaner attachment to clean my kitchen floor is not only quicker, but much more effective than sweeping. When you sweep, you always leave so dirt behind. This is not so when using a vacuum cleaner. On top of that, the hose can get in between appliances and behind your refrigerator. You can even use the hose to clean your refrigerator grill.

No matter what your needs, there is a Panasonic vacuum cleaner designed to help you with house or office cleaning. Not only will your Panasonic vacuum cleaner get your carpeting and rugs very clean, but it can also be used to clean furniture, draperies and, with the attachments, all floor surfaces. Panasonic has the ideal vacuum cleaner to suit all needs.

Using digital cameras has become quite common in many communities and industries. Technology today has made these cameras so popular that now they are often part of cell phone and PDA features allowing users to have a camera available at any time.

Taking basic pictures is the main feature of digital cameras, which is what links them to their film camera predecessors. However, digital cameras also allow users to take video. Upgrading the camera’s memory card gives users great flexibility in storage capacity for both videos and pictures. A wide rage of brands available today includes Nikon, Canon, Kodak, and Olympus and that offer various features.

These brands offer traditional 35mm as well as digital. Other common brands include Sony, Panasonic and Casio. What to Consider in a Digital Camera The LCD offered in digital cameras is a change from the viewfinders of traditional film cameras, and some even offer an LCD screen and a viewfinder. What is nice about the LCD screen is that it allows users to instantly see their picture on a television like screen.

There are also some that have large screens allowing the photographer have a larger view of the subject and background. Digital cameras use memory cards or sticks. These allow the users flexibility in storage capacity from megabytes to gigabytes. Remember, you will pay extra for additional memory. Digital cameras also make use of batteries. The disposal batteries used by some cameras do not last long, so investing in rechargeable batteries might be a good option. Often a battery and charger are offered as part of a camera package.

Lastly, digital pictures need to be downloaded. Many cameras use a USB port that allows easy transfer to a computer. However, some cameras require a memory card reader to download pictures. Features to Consider in a Camera Understanding the cameras basic features should factor into any choice when purchasing a digital camera. The thing to remember is that some brands will offer particular features that need to be considered, even if the basic function of taking a picture remains the same.

One such feature to consider is the mega pixels available and used by a camera. Mega pixels essentially mean the individual dots that comprise a picture. In effect the more mega pixels the clearer a picture will be and that will allow for better picture enlargement. Remember that a camera that has more mega pixels will make for better picture quality. However, the more pixels you have the more memory you will need for each individual picture.

The digital and optical zooms available on a camera are also important to consider. The traditional optical zoom allows you to bring an object closer in the picture. Digital zoom allows cropping or stretching of the picture. Lastly, the casing of a camera should be considered too. Many cameras are made of plastic which makes them more fragile. Others are made of plastic and a metal alloy giving it more durability.

Curtains are one of the most important accessories for a home theater and work in the same way as for windows. They add that beautiful look to the room and also hide the screen. They are ideal when the room is being used for some other purpose and the screen cannot be moved out. Besides, curtains also give the feel of a real theater. The curtains can be classified as blackout lined curtains and unlined curtains. They are available in many different sizes: 28 inch, 48 inch, 68 inch, 88 inch, 108 inch, 128 inch, 148 inch, 168 inch, and 188 inch. They can also be classified in the way they open or the way they are drawn, like center opening, two-way draw and one-way draw.

Home theater curtains are available in an extensive range of colors to match the décor of the room. These colors include avocado, blue, pink, sage, yellow, birch, bordeaux, camel, cherry, cloud, eggplant, forest, gold, herb, hunter, indigo, leaf, melon, mink, noir, sand, scarlet, sequin, and taupe.

Suppliers are also offering custom-designed home theater curtains that can be made to specific requirements in terms of height, width, color, type etc. The ideal way is to provide measurement of the rod length, to which the manufacturer would add another 6 or 12 inches, depending on the kind of draw.

The prices of home theater curtains start from $100. They vary depending upon the size and the material used. The minimum price of a 1-20 inch height curtain with a two-way draw would cost around $130 while that of a 91-108 inch height curtain with a 2-way draw would cost around $320 or even more. A 188-inch curtain would be priced at $700 or more. Some interesting options are also available, like manual or electrical curtain rods with or without curtains.

Consumer Reports is a highly respected consumer focused company that looks out for the everyday shopper. They are well respected, and renowned for their unbiased reviews and objectivity when it comes to finding the pros and cons of any products they review. Digital cameras is just one such product they report on every year.

With so many digital cameras for the modern shopper to choose from, it’s understandable that it can be difficult to know, that your getting good value for your money. Reliable and unbiased reviews can be hard to find, which is why many shoppers turn to companies like Consumer Reports.

Their most recent rankings favored several popular cameras, such as the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W200, Olympus Evolt E-410, and the Canon PowerShot A720 IS. These cameras run the gamut from simple point and shoots to DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras. They not only rank the cameras, but give the reader, an explanation of the many camera features. This specifically is a big help, in educating consumers to help them decide what camera is right for them. That answer itself, is often as difficult to sort out as which is the best camara.

The very thorough battery of tests reveal some common traits about certain types of cameras. Types of cameras being sub compact cameras, automatic point and shoot cameras, and digital slr cameras. Automatic point and shoots tend to produce grainier images, and tend to struggle in low lighting conditions. This is usually due to cheaper lens quality. A problem overcome by many SLRs, even the lower priced beginner DSLRs. SLRs have interchangeable lens, and can be more expensive, but come with extra flexibility for the aspiring photographer.

Another common issue found with the compact and sub-compact models, is slow shutter speed, and lag time before allowing users to take subsequent pictures. They are getting better though. Once again, the SLRs as expected perform better in the area of speed, and low lag times. A common criticism of the SLRs in the past, has been their lack of automatic functions, difficult learning curve, no video function, and an inability to use the LCD screen to frame your photos. This is changing, and several models of SLR have learned from their point and shoot siblings, and offer most of these features. One of the more popular, would be the Canon Rebel Xsi.

Let me share with you something that happened to me just the other day.

I was contacted by a guy named David. He had just purchased a panasonic pv-gs400 3 ccd camcorder and has always been attracted to the videographers lifestyle. He also liked the possibility of earning an extra income doing something that can be a whole lot of fun.

From speaking to David I discovered that he didn’t have much experience with camcorders and was unsure as to whether he would be any good (he seemed to lack a bit of self confidence), but was atleast willing to learn and have a go.

He wasn’t too far from where I live me so I said I was able to get in the car and have a personal meeting with him.

One of his questions to me on the phone was “what should I film?” I told him of the traditional markets – Weddings, Business videos Training videos. Good areas to get started in and the most obvious subjects to film.

David lives in a growth area, outer suburbs continually building and expanding. I found myself driving past new homes being built, young families together in parks, sporting fields and large shopping malls.

Then it dawned on me! It was so obvious the potential subjects, and clients, David had in his own backyard!

The Builder

video proof of the quality that goes into his work
satisfied customer testimonials

Sporting Clubs

club records of big games
match/play review and training tapes

Parents

children’s party videos
records of their child’s achievements (academic, sporting etc.)

Business

local shops and businesses provide potential customers with a video of services

…and the list goes on. So if you find yourself short of ideas on what to film, have a good look around you. The answer might be right under your nose.

Now back to David. He inadvertently made a great choice in the the panasonic pv-gs400 3 ccd camcorder.

It is a great tool for providing a quality finish which will be a high priority as he will be charging for the work he does. It has 3 separate image chips which help give definition to the completed video and for such a top quality camcorder is very reasonably priced.

So with just a few more tools (tripod, lights, external microphone etc.), David is well on his way to a career (either full or part time) in video production.

2. Panasonic Toughbook CF-52

This notebook is a cousin of the latest Panasonic CF-Y7. The CF-52 has solid graphics, widescreen display and astounding battery life.

Add to the that the rugged exterior, and you have a wonderful winner of a laptop here. Last I checked this unit was going for about $1500.

3. Fujitsu Lifebook S6510

If you look at small laptops, you will find most of them lacking an optical drive. The Fujitsu Lifebook S6510 is, however, an exception.

It comes with an on-board optical drive and a 14-inch screen, yet maintains a super compact form. The price has gone done significantly and it now sells for about $1400.

4. Dell Inspiron 1720

The Dell Inspiron 1720 is a great desktop replacement laptop. What you’ll like about the Inspiron 1720 is its massive 17-inch screen, along with integrated mobile broadband from Cingular, Sprint or Verizon (for US customers).

Its price has dropped a lot and is now about $1000.

5. Toshiba Satellite U405-S2830

The Toshiba Satellite U405-S2830 is a pretty new machine with some great features. It has a nice, attractive fusion design, 3GB RAM, internal optical drive, and Intel’s latest processor technology.

All this for a street price of around $1100 – I’d say that’s a bargain on any count.

Conclusion

I hope this article has given you a good overview of the top 5 bargain laptops out in the market. Of course, your opinions may differ – these are but my recommendations. Still, you should check these models out the next time you’re out bargain hunting – they are certainly some of the best laptop deals of the moment.

Along with other digital cameras in this series the Nikon Coolpix L20 is the most straightforward digital cameras I can recall testing. Sure a large part of this is down to its minimal set of features, but if you are looking for complete simplicity the Coolpix L20 is very hard to beat.

Key features include 10 megapixels and a 3.6x optical zoom lens. This gives you enough power for larger prints and although the amount of zoom available is near to the minimum expected it is still enough for a host of standard, social shots. Nikon has also included a large size LCD screen. It is 3 inches in size.

As you would expect for this type of camera the price has been kept relatively low. The body is made out of plastic and although too large for most pockets it is still a compact model. There is a raised, grip area on the front. This can help you to hold the camera steady when taking a shot.

The Coolpix L20 is one of a decreasing number of digital cameras to be powered by AA batteries. Cameras at this end of the market still tend to be battery hungry despite advances in technology so you will save yourself money in the longer term if you also invest in some good quality, rechargeable batteries.

Looking at the features that are available you get a standard movie mode and a selection of predefined scene modes. The movies produced should be of sufficient quality to playback on a TV screen, although it is worth stating that there is no widescreen TV mode and no High Definition settings. I use the landscape scene mode for any scenic shot I take with most Nikon digital cameras. I find this helps to stop sharpness falling away as you move out towards the edges of a photo.

You can focus from 5cm away from a subject in macro mode. I found my close up shots to be of good quality. When shooting bright shiny objects using macro mode you may have to look out for purple fringing showing up where your light source catches the subject. That problem aside you will have to pay considerably more to notice a significant difference in the quality of your close up shots.

A smile shutter mode has been incorporated for if you like the idea of firing off a shot automatically when the camera detects someone is smiling. I think this is a bit of a gimmick, but you might find it comes in handy now and again.

Shutter lag times for a single shot were in line with other similarly priced digital cameras, but I did detect the camera slowing considerably when reeling off more than one shot at a time. The camera is also a little slow to turn on and take the first shot.

There has been a glut of this type of camera introduced during the spring of 2009. Nikon themselves has introduced two new cameras with Canon, Olympus, Fuji, Panasonic, Pentax and Sony also pitching in with new offerings. Out of the cameras I have tested so far the Coolpix L20 along with the Coolpix L19 is the easiest to use and is just a shade behind the Canon Powershot A480 when it comes to picture quality. I especially like the amount of brightness Nikon manage to bring out in pictures even with cheaper cameras like this one. One downside when it comes to picture quality is that the corners of photos can be noticeably darker when the lens is not zoomed in at all. This is down to an imperfection in the lens and is difficult to overcome.

Whether buying for yourself or a gift for a loved one, finding just the right DVD player isn’t as easy as it seems. There are so many formats, sizes and added features for DVD players today that you might sift through hundreds of players before finding the right one at the right price. Use this quick guide to compare the types of DVD players available on the electronics market.

DVD Player Sizes

Determine what size player you will need. If you’re adding a DVD player to your home entertainment system, determine where you will put it and how much space is available. Normal-sized DVD players can be rather wide so you’ll want to be sure of your available space before shopping. DVD players are also very thin in height and most have a slot on the front that slides in and out for inserting the DVD. This is great if you have a wide space that is limited in height.

For odd-shaped spaces or very tight spots, there are different sizes and shapes of DVD players. These are usually available at electronics stores online so you’ll have plenty of styles to choose from. The vertical DVD player, for example, sits upright similar to a vertical computer drive. It comes with a stand to hold it in a sturdy position. If you still have your old VHS collection, there are DVD/VHS combo machines that play both formats. This saves space as well. Also available are super slim DVD players and “space saver” DVD players to fit your personal needs.

Types of DVD Players

Once you determine the size you’ll need, you’re ready to compare name brands and features at the electronics store or website of your choice. You can often find many different brands and styles of players at one single electronics mall online. This will allow you to compare without spending hours searching through many websites.

Some of the features you’ll see include progressive scan, time-slip recording, EZ editing, zoom, slow motion, HD (high definition) DVD, front audio/video input jacks, CD-R/-RW playback, MP3-CD playback, D/A converter, favorite scene selection, TV Guardian, and many others. You may not find one particular DVD player that carries every feature, so it’s wise to determine which features are important to you before selecting a player. Which features will you likely use the most? Which will you probably never use?

You’ll also notice there are many brand names for DVD players. Some of the well-known brands include Philips, Coby, Emerson, Toshiba, Magnavox, Sanyo, and Panasonic. Pricing for DVD players can range from around $50 to $500 depending on the features you choose.

If buying a DVD player for your child, there are also players with children’s themes. The player will actually look like the child’s favorite cartoon character!

To find the DVD player that’s right for you, search online by brand name, features, or price to compare. Or, you can visit an online mall to compare all in one location. Besides electronics, you can also find other great items at an online mall such as computers, laptops, lingerie, pets, automotive products, telephones, jewelry, household products, toys, and more. Take your time to find the DVD player that will meet your needs. You’ll enjoy years of quality entertainment!
